St. Alban's Adult Basic Literacy Program was born in 2004 after it was learned no one-on-one tutoring program for reading existed in Polk County. With training from the area ProLiteracy America tutor trainer, we began the program with ten tutors and six students.
Tutors and students are matched according to interests and personality, as much as possible, on a trial basis until they each determine whether they can work together. So far, we have had wonderful success stories.
The literacy program is open to any adult with a desire to learn to read or to improve his or her reading skills. Since this is a ministry of St. Alban's, there is no charge to the student for tutoring or materials. For more information or to volunteer contact Susie Danielsson, program Coordinator: e-mail: Susie Danielsson or 417-754-1054.
In addition to basic reading, the program can also offer English as a second language (ESL) for a limited number of students. Life skills is another important area of interest which we have added to our literacy program.
