Leader: We adore you, O Christ, and we praise you:
All: because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.
Leader: A large number of people followed Jesus, including women who mourned and wailed for him. Jesus turned to them and said, "Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me, but weep for yourselves and for your children." The Jewish leaders thought they were saving the people by killing him, but Jesus saw the dark future when Rome would crush Jerusalem and scatter the Jewish people. And he ached for the women and children who would be killed then, as they wept for his dying now.
Leader: Beloved Lord God, in your own suffering you knew our pain. Though women wept bitter tears for you on your way to the cross, the tears you wept for the world were far more bitter. You suffered for every person born into this world so corrupted by sin. Have mercy on us, Lord God, and teach us to grieve for the destructive power of sin, more than for the small power of death, a power not broken by your risen life. Many one day all tears of sadness be wiped away by the sounds of laughter and praise when we come to see you face to face.
All: Amen
